Biological Response of Tissue Engineered Mucosa to Ionizing Radiation: A Time Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Tissue Engineered Mucosa (TEM) was originally designed to reconstruct large oral defects remaining in the oral cavity after oncological resection. TEM consists of human keratinocytes and fibroblasts seeded onto an a-cellular dermal scaffold . Previous study 2 in our laboratory showed that TEM could also be used as a tool to study the biological response to ionizing radiation (IR), as IR is a major part of the treatment of patients after oncological resection. This study focused on the biological response of TEM in time after exposure to a single dose of IR. We hypothesize that TEM is capable to detect DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) caused by IR, and that TEM can repair this damage using the main DNA repair pathways, non-homologous endjoining (NHEJ) and homologous recombination (HR).

Radiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation
Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects ...

Introduction: Staffs of operating room are continuously exposed to anesthetic gases and ionizing radiation. Adaptive response, as a defense mechanism, will occur when cells become exposed to a low dose of factors harming DNA that causes in the next exposures to higher doses o...
متن کاملPET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors
Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...

Background: Given the effects of ionizing radiation on biological tissues and their irreversible tissue damage, this project aimed to determine the synergic effect of TC99-m gamma radiation and non-ionizing radiation of Wi-Fi on sperm characteristics in rats. Materials and Methods: Sixty adult male rats, weighing 250-200 g randomly divided into four groups (three experimental groups and one co...
متن کاملNew Horizons in Enhancing the Proliferation and Differentiation of Neural Stem Cells Using Stimulatory Effects of the Short Time Exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation
Mobile phone use and wireless communication technology have grown explosively over the past decades. This rapid growth has caused widespread global concern about the potential detrimental effects of this technology on human health. Stem cells generate specialized cell types of the tissue in which they reside through normal differentiation pathways. Considering the undeniable importance of stem ...
